OCEAN SPIRIT
Pupukea, North Shore, Oahu
Ocean Spirit is a
20-minute long exposure taken between 10 pm and 10:20 pm at night on the
North Shore of Oahu. During the exposure, Sheer carefully walks out
onto the dark jagged lava rock while carrying a ceremonial paddle in his
hand and wearing a haku lei on his head and a ti leaf lei around his neck. Sheer
strikes a pose and remains perfectly still while waves crash towards him in
the darkness.
Although it looks serene, the ocean at this location is
extremely violent and unpredictable. One week earlier, 25-foot-tall
hills of water were jumping out of the ocean at this exact spot to crash
further onshore.
While in his pose, Sheer hides a portable lighting
device in his right hand and quickly creates bright circles of light on the
foam of the waves that crash before him. Meanwhile, his body creates a
silhouette on the negative. After a couple minutes, he feels his way
back towards the camera in the darkness. As the exposure continues,
the moonlight makes the silhouette translucent as well as brightening the
entire scene. Twenty minutes of crashing waves and foam is also lit by
the moonlight to create the velvety Dali-esque seascape. |
